Easy Spider Jello Shots with Black Jello

Our realtor told me that in his neighborhood, when you bring your kids trick or treating, some of the houses coordinate and make jello shots for the adults.  How cool is that???

While attempting something fun for our neighborhood, I came up with this one.

Because I always keep it real with you …. This recipe idea started off in a completely different place.

Initially they were going to be little circles with licorice legs sticking out of them. My first problem was finding the right sized circular cookie cutter. It had to be small enough to look like a spider but thick enough to hold in the licorice legs. After failing to find one I went with squares.

Then I failed again. Those licorice strings won’t stay put in jello! They break the jello or fall out.

I had pretty much given up and was just going to take photos of the gorgeous black jello cubes when I realized abstractly, with the cubes laying on top of and around the strings (cut to the right length) it worked! This techniques was actually a lot simpler as well.

I am obsessed with how glossy and creepy and poison like the black jello came out. It tastes good too!

P.S. Let’s hope my neighbors don’t think I am the crazy booze pushing lady!

Easy Spider Jello Shots with Black Jello

Yield: 24 shots or more

Prep Time: 20 mins

Cook Time: 1 hour

Total Time: 1 hour 20 mins

  • 1 box grape jello (3 oz.)
  • 1 box orange jello (3 oz.)
  • 4 drops blue food coloring
  • 5 drops red food coloring
  • 2 envelops Knox Gelatin
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups vodka of choice (I used whipped cream flavored vodka)
  • Black licorice strings
  • 9x13 inch pan

Step 1. Pour your grape and orange jello into a medium sized sauce pan. Add two cups of water and stir. Sprinkle two envelops Knox Gelatin on top and let it sit for a minute to activate. Turn on medium heat and whisk until combined. Heat until liquid comes to a light simmer. Turn off heat.

Step 2. Add two cups vodka.

Step 3. Pour your vodka jello mixture into a lightly greased 9x13 inch pan. Refridgerate for 45-60 minutes or until completely firm.

Step 4. Cut across the 9x13 pan vertically making three strips of jello. Carefully remove each strip with a rubber spatula and your hand. Place on a chopping board and cut into uniform squares.

Step 5. Place the squares/cubes on a serving platter and then cut your licorice strings in the leghths that would resemble legs off of each cube. Try to fill each as much white space on the platter as you can, it doesn't have to be perfect though.

Serve and eat responsibly! Trick or Treat!

something you could do – make in icecube tray and lay the licorice through each before they firm, then the legs will be attached!

How would you make this kids friendly?

Just made them! One note: I found the 9″ x 13″ pan was far too large leaving shots that were just about 1/2″ thick. I transferred the “potion” into a 9″ x 9″ pan — looks a lot better! Looking forward to seeing how they turn out! Thanks for the recipe!
